A 1987 re-enactment of the Summer of Love in Houston

This page arose as a result of the sudden transformation of Houston's long-time classic rock station KLOL 101.1 to "Mega 101 FM: Latino and Proud". Many of us Houstonians have been mourning the loss, and although I was not a  KLOL listener, I was saddened by the loss nonetheless.

During a "KLOL wake" at my workplace, a co-worker offered to provide 6 hours of cassette audio that was recorded on June 1st 1987, the day KLOL celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Sgt. Pepper album by re-enacting a broadcast from  June 1st 1967 through the combination of archival audio and creative role-playing by the on-air personalities.

During this  day they called themselves K-101 Mother's family radio.

Here is an article describing the event from the Houston Chronicle archives, courtesy of "purplejay" on the radio-info.com Houston forum.

The creativity evidenced here is testimony to the greatness of radio in both 1967 and 1987, and a sad reminder of what has been lost in today's world of bland corporate stations!

Needless to say, I have digitized these tapes and offer these MP3 samples for you listening enjoyment. Go ahead, light one up and be sure and bring something to share:
