Rochester81 - A late 60's Flashback from the late 70's

This is a flashback of a flashback, so to speak.  From our perspective halfway into the first decade of the 21st century, the late 60's and the late 70's seem close together in the past, especially for those too young to remember either decade. Three decades really come into play here, the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

The late 1960's were synonymous with college activism and unrest. In many ways they more closely resemble today's situation with Iraq and Bush than do the next two decades.

The 60's took very little time to reach legendary status. By the time I came to the U of R in 1977, they were already there, and it seemed that as students we wanted those days to live on. Through music, marijuana, and hairstyles we were able to re-create a lot of it, but the one part that was gone forever was the spirit of protest and challenging the establishment. With the 70's came apathy, and as the 80's approached, it hardened into greed and selfishness. Suddenly the establishment was admired. Hippies gave way to Yuppies.

The 70's were a "weak" decade that took several years to be defined, and began yielding to the more dominant 80's several years early. For practical purposes, the 70's was really the period from 1973 to 1977. By the time it was late 1979, the 80's were virtually here.

One frequent topic of conversation on campus in the late 70's was "Did U of R students actually participate in the 60's mayhem?". It seemed impossible to believe.

Logos stepped up to the plate to show us once and for all that they did in the October 19, 1979 issue:

Here is another "flashback to a flashback" in which the 1960's were celebrated in a later decade:
